It's common for people to picture where they see themselves in the future. Where the challenge comes in is being in the "present" and doing what is necessary to CREATE the future. It is created first in our thoughts....our thoughts are comparable to a "steering wheel" that will create our futures. There are two versions of you. Your present self, and the experiences you are having right now, and your future self, and the experiences you WANT to be having then. For instance, most people would have seen the picture on the internet of the cat looking in a mirror and seeing a lion. Usually, when visualizing your future self, you get excited and your belief level is at a peak. However, a few days, weeks, or months later, you are so focused on your present self, your situations and challenges, that you have lost sight of your future self.
There is no argument that the present "reality" can look and be experienced very differently than what you are picturing for your future self. This is when it is VITAL to stay focused and continue to take the actions necessary to bring about the result that your future self desires.
Our minds have neural connectors that are our thought patterns. Everything we have learned is contained within these neural connectors in our brains, and we believe whatever is the most dominant. Much of these beliefs are from limited thinking and past conditioning and do not serve us in moving forward in the direction we want to go. The good news is, we are in charge of our thoughts. We CAN learn to identify and change any thought that is not serving us. It takes awareness and continued effort to change our thoughts, but by being consistent and persistent, youCAN learn to override the past beliefs and replace those beliefs with new, empowering beliefs that will move you forward.
Visuals always help me understand a concept. I like to compare it to pasta. When I learned this principle, I pictured my old thought patterns as pieces of thick linguine, and my new thoughts forming as the thickness of spagetti. When we cook spagetti, it gets thicker in dimension. I pictured every new thought over and over and over again until the new thought became like a lasagna noodle in my mind, therefore overriding the old piece of linguine. This was a fascinating process, because it really taught me the power of thought, and how old thoughts keep surfacing, even when we know better. It really demonstrated how strong thought is without even trying. That was a breakthrough for me personally because I realized if thought can beTHAT powerful without trying, imagine how powerful my new thoughts would become by PURPOSELY replanting them in my brain, over and over again.
I shared this with someone recently that I was coaching who was working through this principle. The next time we spoke, she had made her own visual, but was still feeling like she was struggling with it. Her visual was her thoughts were on a whiteboard in her mind, and as old, self defeating thoughts came up, she kept erasing them from the whiteboard. The reason she was feeling stuck was, although she was picturing erasing those thoughts, she wasn't replacing them with new supportive thoughts that would override those self defeating thoughts. I suggested she picture herself writing the new thoughts that support her future self inPERMANENT market on the whiteboard. As she continues to erase the old thoughts that pop up, the new thoughts are still there in bold, permanent market becoming stronger every day.
A good exercise to demonstrate the power of the future self is to think about something you have accomplished. Notice the certainty you have, because you are living in the proof you have done it. Now think back to a time when you didn't know or believe you could have done this. As you are now looking back, as this person who HAS accomplished this, what would you say to that past version of yourself...what advice would you give? You KNOW 100% you can do it, because you HAVE DONE IT. There is 100% certainty. You know you had challenges along the way, but you found ways to push through. Give the advice to your past self from this spot. As you move forward toward your future self now, realize how certain your future self is, despite any doubts you have right now.
It's interesting the little tricks we can play on our minds that can make the world of difference. Sometimes we know something, but for some reason it isn't sticking. It requires a little extra to create our light bulb moment. This is where these little visuals we create can assist us to create the future self we envision. Our future self knows we can do what we set our mind to. Our future self knows we can and have pushed through any challenges that come up along the way. Our future self knows we can do anything we set our mind to. The key is to listen to our future self, and not get sidetracked with our present self and the past limiting beliefs that are controlling us. Our minds don't know the difference between what is real and what is imagined. When you understand this, you can purposely plant the ideas that support the direction you want to take in your life, and your thinking will change to draw the support, ideas, etc., that you require to achieve your goal.
